Dental assistant training at our school is comprehensive and includes trimming dental models and bite registration. The photos in the post show some of our students learning these skills.
Dental models are used to give the dentist an exact replica of a selected patient’s teeth, gingiva, and surrounding mouth tissues. The model is often used for study to best determine the patient’s recommended treatment. In addition the model can be used for fabrication of appliances like mouth-guards, whitening trays, etc.
A dental model is a common way to make a cast or ‘positive’ model of the patient’s dentition and is made from the alginate dental impression or ‘negative’ mould. Once the model has been poured and set, it is ready to be trimmed as these students are learning.
Part of these student’s dental assistant training includes learning to take bite registrations. A bite registration is the process of taking an impression of a patient’s upper and lower teeth in the bite position. These registrations assist in the making and fitting of crowns, dentures, mouth-guards, etc. There are various methods of taking bite registrations ranging from using color-coated foil, polysiloxane or other wax-like material, to the most modern sensor technology attached to a computer.

This was an amazing experience! All the instructors were incredibly helpful and they made sure that everyone was comfortable with the material and understood it. I was able to decide that this is the career I want and without this class I would have never fallen in love with dentistry. Hands-on experience is very helpful along with the visual aids. – says Hannah G. from Eagle CO.
